Despite the low sunspot numbers, and not forgetting the devastation of Fires in NSW (where the news had just announced the complete demolition of a whole town) the band was very kind to people in the northern part of New Zealand. It was a most amazing experience, in which I was able to work every station that appeared in the ANZO Net.
On 40m (7105kHz)
VK4ZD, Bill, was 59, and gave me 59
ZL2WT, David (a Rotarian in Hastings) was 59, and gave me 59+20
ZL2JPM, John in Wellington, was 59, and gave me 59 (but there was some severe QSB)
on 20m (14295.2kHz)
VK4ZD, Bill ,was 59+10, and gave me 59+10
ZL2JPM, John, was 58 (with QSB sometimes down to 42) and gave me 59
F1CFA, Jean-Pierre was 31.and gave me 42. (There was an improvement later)
VK2BIA, Matt, was 59 (with QSB down to 44) and gave me 59
G4HCK, Nick, was 52 (Peaking 59) and gave me 52
G0EGW, Vernon, was 57, peaking 59, and gave me 58. A most consistent signal.
PA3AHC, Malcolm, was 22, and gave me 32
G4AKC/bm, Dave, was 56, and gave me 57. He was bicycle Mobile, with 100w, and a ¼ wave vertical. But near the sea.
ZL2FAD, Freddie, was 54, and gave me 59.
In 2013, Pertti EA7GSU (SK) had been working us on 40m with some very impressive signal strengths. The attached photo shows his 40m Vertical, with Counterpoise.
He explained to me that there were no radials - the bundle of fencing wire was tuned to give a low-impedance “Grounding” to the vertical,
using a coupling method used by G4AKC, Bicycle Mobile, who had worked the world from his bicycle. It was just a pipe-dream at the time, but now I too have worked G4AKC, and he had one of the strongest signals on the band. So it is all true.
Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2020 to you all.
QTH Whangaparaoa (Nr Auckland).
From Jean-Pierre F1CFA
It's for me a pleasure to wish you all a very happy Christmas day.
It was a pleasure to read about the Doug's family. A great moment ! Many Thanks Doug ! Yes, Pertti and Klaus are missing us. as very good friends. We keep them in memory.
Here, in the South France, we'll visit our first son and grand children ( a few km away) and shave the Christmas time. Unfortunately, my second son and his wife are living in Honk Kong since seven years with family and my grand son Ferdinand ( 7 years old). We just can have an Internet meeting via Satellite !!!
This morning I heard perfectly well Bill, then Doug...Then, much later, ZL2JPM, G4HCK, G0EGW, PA3AHC and a new station G4AAC ( I guess ). The signals were poor ( about 44 at best ) but I had been told that the new year, we'll have a new sun much more generous !
Happy Christmas day and New Year.
