Roar Nets September 3rd - September 5th 2017

ROAR Nets Report for 3rd and 5th September 2017
0600z - 0630z Anzo Net on 7,110
From Bill VK4ZD
Please note that I will be absent from the sched next Sunday and will be too late getting back to the shack for the Tues sched as well.
Peter VK3KCD was 58 and gave me 59
Phil VK2MCB was 58-9 and gave me 59
John ZL2JPM and I exchanged 57 reports
0630z- 0730z Europe - Anzo Net on 14,295.2 Long Path
From Bill VK4ZD
Peter VK3KCD was 57 and gave me 59
Phil VK2MCB was 55 and gave me 53
John ZL2JPM was 54 and gave me 51
Klaus HB9CQS abd I exchanged 57 reports
Doug ZL1BFS was 57-8 and gave me 57
Vernon G0EGW built from 33 to 54-5 and gave me 56
Pertti EA7GSU was 22-44 and gave me 53
From G3LUW
The 20m net was non-existent here. I thought I heard Pertti, but a very weak signal.
From John G3OKT
I got no joy from the 20m net either, conditions were very strange - great expectations from SFI 100, A 26 (red) and sunspots high at 71. But all I heard was noise, faint contest QRM and QRN, and strong modulation from the broadcast harmonic. No sign of VKs and even Pertti and Klaus came and went weakly. I called CQ at 0630 and Vernon G0EGW returned.
VK2MCB Phil was "5.3 but not as strong as Bill" with HB9CQS at 0640z, and 3.3 with Pertti at 0702z.
G0EGW was 5.9 with EA7GSU. Pertti also gave 5.7 for G3LUW, 5.5 for G4HCK and 5.3 for G3OKT. EA7GSU was 5.7 but said he "heard VKs through 10 doors."
VK4ZD was 5.7 with HB9CQS at 0654z, but Klaus was poor copy here.
G0EGW was still talking to VK4ZD at 0655 but Bill was not heard here.
VK3KCD Peter was on the net but not hear here.
G0EGW came up fast and briefly 5.2-9 in QSB
EA7GSU was heard at 0700z but then all signals disappeared. Just noise and S5 QRN.
HB9CQS returned at 1.1 QSB at 0733 giving VK4ZD 5.4.
Broadcast stn at S5 QSB and with modulation, noise and QRN became a nightmare at 0704z. No ROAR signals were recognised any longer, so I went QRT at 0720z.
From Nick G4HCK (on Monday)
Yesterday’s net was what can be classified as ‘awful’. If it wasn’t for Vernon and Pertti I would have been on my own. Looking at the internet reports it would appear a storm had stopped a lot of the propagation.
However as I am typing this email (Monday morning 08.00 UK time) I have VK5AEP at 5.7 and a second station from VK at 5.5. I will try to get on the Tuesday morning net – yes I know VK is a large land mass but lets hope Bill and Phil's antennae can catch the UK propagation as it passes over head.
From Bill VK4ZD
I am glad that VK5 had some propagation. Even when things are working it seems to be very selective. Last Sunday I could hear Klaus, a bit of Vernon and even less of Pertti. Peter VK3KCD got through as well when you might think he would not.
VK5 is a lot further west (a 30 minute time zone difference).
Bill also notes :- I will be there but we can't guarantee what will work and what will not and when.
Please note that I will be absent from the sched next Sunday and will be too late getting back to the shack for the Tues sched as well.
0800z - 0900z UK 80-metre Net on 3,694
From Brian G3LUW
I ran the 80m net, but there were only five of us. and I brought it to an end after 30 minutes. Others were G2FUU, G3SZF, G3JJR & G4LXD. SFI=100 A=26 (red) K=3 sunspots 71
From G3OKT by email
I looked in on 3.694 at 0825 and heard many Eu stations at 5.9 across the band but no sign of ROAR so I went QRT at 0728z.
FYI on 2018 AGM, I visited The Hand Hotel, Llangollen last week and confirmed we don't need the huge room they have reserved for us for our meeting. When they tell me the price of an adequate room, I will inform everyone of the details and the date by when we have to book.
1700z – 1730z RIBI evening 80-metre Net on 3,694 MHz
2230z - 2300z Informal Transcontinental net on 7.118 +/- QRM
From Ed N4EDT and Dave WN5V
40 meter propagation was changing and challenging for net control. The 20 meter propagation went right over the N4EDT’s station without being heard. Thanks to Dave, WN5V for working as net control for the 20 meter net.

WN5V served as net control for the 20 meter portion of the net. N3EDT was approximately in the center of the propagation cloud only able to hear KB1XG and WA1SJG.

Good propagation from all over. At the end you (N4EDT) were beginning to come up (I swung my beam due east and that helped - most of the day it was between 30 - 45 Deg. Only KA9LFX was a Rotarian, but many had heard of it. Bob, N9PWM belonged to the Kiwana, but was glad we had a group of Rotary Hams!
0800z – 0830z Tuesday 5th September 2017 NZ 80-m net on 3,693
0630z - 0700z Tuesday September 5th 2017 EUR net on 14,295.2
Apologies from Pertti who missed this net
From Bill VK4ZD
WOW real Condx for a change
Peter VK3KCD was 44-55 building to 58 and gave me 57
Vernon G0EGW was 55-6 and gave me 58-9
Phil VK2MCB was 56
Klaus HB9CQS was 58 and gave me 59
Nick G4HCK was 44 and gave me 52 I think
Malcolm PA3AHC climbed out of the murk with a 33-44 signal
John G3OKT was 44 and gave 52-4
Cisco EA4GWL (visitor) was 56 and gave me 59
I closed the net at about 0710z
Many other non Rotarian stations then successfully called both Phil VK2MCB and myself
From John G3OKT
At 0605z, the QSL site gave SFI 183 A 18 (red) K 3 sunspots 122
I was late joining the net. At 0655z, VK4ZD was 5.5 with Vernon G0EGW.
G0EGW was only a "wavy" 3.1 here and in QRN. Bill was 5.3-6 and gave me 4.4.
G4HCK was 2.1 here with slow QSB - poor copy; Nick was 5.3 b/w with VK2MCB
VK2MCB was 5.6 here. Phil gave me 5.7 (our first contact on the rotatable spider!)
EA4GWL a visitor called in at 0703z; gave Bill 5.9 and got 5.6. Cisco (?) was also 5.6 here.
G0EGW Vernon got 5.9 from Phil at 0709z
Signals started falling at 0710z - VK2MCB was down to 5.2 at 0715
PA3AHC was not heard here but Malcolm was just recognisable by Phil at 2.1
Bill closed the net at 0713z, but many Eu stations continued to give Bill and Phil fine reports - Pete YO7MPD gave Bill 5.8 at 0717 in exchange for 5.7; "Igor" gave Bill 5.9
That’s all for now!
