ROAR Nets Report for 17th and 19th Jan 2016
(Sorry again for the delay – I think I have included all contributions jet/G3OKT)
0730z - 0800z Anzo Net on 7,110
From Bill VK4ZD
Phil VK2MCB was 59
Peter VK3KCD was 59 and gave me 58.
Noel VK2IWT was 59+15 and gave me 59+25
0800z - 0900z Europe - Anzo Net on 14,295.2 Long Path
From Bill VK4ZD
We started out full of hope but the woodpecker was 59+20 and stayed that
way for the whole of the net with small breaks. Propagation between VK4
and Europe really did NOT open. Weird.
Peter VK3KCD was present but gave up early
Doug ZL1BFS was 57-9
Phil VK2MCB was present and gave up after waiting forever for a clear frequency.
Noel VK2IWT was present
Henk VK2GWK and I exchanged 57 reports
Klaus was briefly 57 before dropping in signal
Nick G4HCK was heard briefly
Coco YO9BC was heard briefly about 55
Miika OH2BAD was 56-7 at best and gave me 33. He did a great job of net control.
John G3OKT was heard 33
Brian G3LUW was heard 33
Les PA0SDZ was heard faintly
I listened (ever the optimist) until 0855z
From John G3OKT
SFI 100 A 4 K 0 sunspots 38 (low)
G3LUW exchanged 5.6 b/w with me, and Brian was also 5.8-9 b/w with YO9BC. Coco was 5.9 here and gave me 5.8.
OH2BAD was 5.9+20dB b/w here (he increased to S9+35dB at 0826!). Miika gave Brian 5.9+10dB.
PA0SDZ was only just hearable here; Les got 5.9 from Miika.
VK4ZD got 3.3 from Miika at 0827; Bill was only faintly heard here – giving Miika 5.7?
ZL1BFS exchanged 5.6 b/w with Miika; Doug was 3.3 here. Doug gave Brian G3LUW 5.5 at 0817 and got 5.6.
VK2GWK gave Miika 5.7; Henk got 5.6 from Miika.
PA3AHC was just 1.1 here. Did I hear Miika give Malcolm 5.9+25dB at 0835?
F1CFA was 5.7 b/w with Miika. No copy of Jean Pierre here at all.
HB9CQS was 5.7 with Miika. I could only just recognize Klaus by his voice!
EA7GSU was a solid 5.7 here at 0838 and gave Miika 5.9+20dB. Pertti said VK4ZD had been 4.1 earlier; ZL1BFS 5.3; G3OKT 5.9; HB9CQS 5.6; YO9BC 5.7; VK2GWK 5.3; G3LUW 5.9; PA0SDZ 5.8; PA3AHC 5.8; and F1CFA no copy; VK2MCB was known to be on frequency but no copy by Pertti. Pertti summed up the net as a “woodpecker filled morning”. Woodpecker stayed a constant S5 here but apparently was causing much more trouble in VK/ZL.
ZL1BFS peaked 3.5 here at 0827; Doug gave Malcolm 2.2.
PA0SDZ heard me at 4.2; Les gave G3LUW 4.3, PA3AHC 5.8, F1CFA 4.2, and EA7GSU 5.9.
G4HCK was only 2.2 here under woodpecker, but was 5.9+20dB with Miika and also gave Pertti 5.7.
HB9CQS came up to 5.5 here at 0848 and gave both G3OKT and Doug 5.6 at 0827. Klaus said that Doug was the only VK/ZL station heard. Doug and I exchanged 5.4 b/w at the end of the net at 0852.
From Doug ZL1BFS
I tuned up my rig at 0745, and was astounded at how quiet the band was - Noise at S1-2 and this was about the quietest it had been in months - then the woodpecker came on at S9+20dB. Totally drowned out everything for 50 seconds, then was off for 100 seconds, then the cycle re-commenced, every 150 seconds during the whole net. At 0900z, just as Miika was signing the net off, the woodpecker cycle stopped completely.
Initially all I could copy were the VKs
VK4ZD Bill was 59, and gave me 59
VK2MCB Phil was 57 and gave me 57
VK2IWT Noel was 56
VK2GWK Henk was 59 and gave me 59
Briefly I heard YO9BC Coco 57, but a bout of Woodpecker arrived before I could work him, then he appeared to go QRT
OH2BAD Miika came in a solid 57/8 - and gave me 56. Miika was even readability 4 during woodpecker bouts
The rest of the sked was very much dependent on operating in the clear periods between woodpecker bouts. Signals less than S8 were completely obliterated. However over the course of the Net, I managed to work:
G3LUW Brian 56, and got 55
HB9CQS Klaus, initially 33, but improved later to 54 and gave me 56
EA7GSU Pertti was initially 11, but improved to 33. I am not sure what he gave me
G4HCK Nick was 42, and gave me 51
G3OKT John was 54, and gave me 54
At various times I heard PA0SDX Les 22, PA3AHC Malcolm 31, and F1CFA Jean-Pierre 22, but the woodpecker precluded a proper contact, and I don’t know if they heard me.
In the second 15 minute period, several VKs called various of the Europeans, but the woodpecker put paid to any sustained contacts. Then at about 0830 all the VKs went quiet.
OH2BAD stayed the strongest signal from Europe for the whole Net - a solid 57/8 right to the end.
0900z -1000z UK 80-metre Net on 3,694
From John G3OKT who was Net Control.
G3LUW was 5.9+10dB here. Brian heard Malcolm at 5.6-7 and got 5.4.
G2FUU - we were all glad that Tommy suffered no consequences from his “medicinal accident” but he was 5.9+10dB like Brian (10dB down on usual?)
G3SZF Bob was 5.9+10dB; also heard Malcolm at 4.7 in S7 noise
G0SQH was 5.8 here; Derek had no copy of Malcolm
PA3AHC was 5.8 with Tommy. Malcolm was 5.7 with QSB here and gave me 5.9+10dB. Malcolm heard other stations at 5.9 and went QRT at 0915.
G0PCF was 5.9 here; heard G0SQH well at first but then Derek faded into S9 noise level
G4LXD Bill said all except Derek were 5.9 and Malcolm was 4.7. Bill was 5.9+20dB here.
Brian clarified that the Annual Rotary Convention station HL16RI in Seoul was to be heard from now.
John G3OKT apologized for his forthcoming absence on Tuesday 19th January.
Brian said that G3JJR was having a new bathroom installed and would not be on air before next week.
G3OKT promised details of the May 2016 ROAR in RIBI AGM in case Bill and Marion were able to attend.
The net closed at 0950z
1200z – 1300z TransAtlantic Net on 14,287/8
Sunday Trans-Atlantic net at 1500hrs utc on 14287kHz
Pertti had said on the 0900z ANZO net that he would be on 14.310 MHz at 1500hrs.
From Pertti EA7GSU
I started calling at 1500 hrs utc on 14310kHz and got Brian, G3LUW back with 59 signal. As the qrg may not have been known to all members, I decided to make few calls also on 14287/8 advising of the new pole. Coming back to 310, out of the noise rose a French speaking station complaining the frequency to be occupied. At the same time Klaus, HB9CQS reported and I qsy’d 3 kc lower to 14307kHz. Next member was Jean Pierre , F1CFA with STRONG signal being pleasant to hear as normally nothing is trickling through. We then got also Malcolm, PA3AHC with 57. The usual bad hearing between EU stations was valid and everybody had some hick - up’s in copying. I kept calling and Klaus made a try as well but nothing was received from behind the big pond.
We closed the net at 1525utc.
We try again next Sunday
Nick G4HCK e-mailed “Listened on 14.310 at 15.00 GMT today. Did not hear anyone”

From Bill VK4ZD
Signals much better for today
Coco YO9BC was 57-8 and gave me 58-9 - his rotator was frozen
Phil VK2MCB was 57 and gave me 59
Brian G3LUW built from 54 to 58 and gave me a similar report
Pertti EA7GSU was 57 and gave me 58
Klaus HB9CQS and I exchanged 59+10 reports
Malcolm PA3AHC was 54 and gave me 55 on his dipole (yagi frozen to the roof)
Mihai (Mike) YO9BPX was 58 initially, building to 59+5 and gave me 59.
He is also a Rotarian; welcome Mihai.
We moved to 7.138 but VK qrm and weak signals were a challenge for me.
Klaus HB9CQS was 55 (in the clear) with me
Brian G3LUW was also 55 (in the clear) with me
From Brian G3LUW
Coco YO9BC called at 0800 on 14.295. Not very strong but his beam was frozen solid.
Pertti EA7GSU appeared at 0810, and we contacted Bill VK4ZD at 0815. Only 5.5 here, but increased to 5.8 by 0830.
Coco had to go at 0820 but introduced another Rotarian Mike YO9BPX, who was very strong at 5&9+ here and 5.9 with Bill.
I worked Klaus HB9CQS at 5.8 both ways, and Phil VK2MCB gave me 4.4. He was 5.5 here. I had no copy on Malcolm PA3AHC or Jean-Pierre F1CFA. At 0835 Pertti suggested we QSY to 7138. I could hear Pertti and Klaus, but Bill was barely audible.
The net closed at 0845
