Roar Nets July 6th - July 8th 2014
ROAR Nets Report for Sunday 6th and Tuesday 8th July 2014

0515z-0600z ANZO Net on 7118
Bill VK4ZD  was unable to be present as he was at his Rotary District changeover.

From Phil VK2MCB
An enjoyable but small net. Conditions were reasonable with some QSB present causing signals to vary between 5/5 and 5/9.  Participants were Phil VK2MCB and Bryce VK2FADS.  Bryce was 5/8 and gave me 5/7.  We were joined by a visitor, Rick VK2RP, a member of the Amateur Club of Armidale who happened to be a friend of Noel VK2IWT (currently in Canada for the northern summer).
Looking forward to an enhanced 40 metre net on 13 July.

From John G3OKT
I listened from 0523 and heard VK4ZD under constant S6 noise and a Eur. CW contest, but no sign of any other ANZO stations.

From Malcolm PA3AHC
Sunday's  20m pipeline to PA-land at last opened, and thanks to Pertti for the alternate rig check thereafter which  went better than expected. (Good old Heathkit SB 201 !)

0800z - 0900z UK 80-metre Net on 3,693
From John G3OKT
4 stations today, peaking G3LUW 5.9+20 here, G2FUU 5.9+10dB here and G3JJR here at 5.9+20dB but with heavy QSB down to S7 (Tommy and me b/w)
G3LUW was 5.7/8 with Tommy - unreadable at one point; G3OKT was 5.7/9.
The net ended at 0850. Brian and Tommy thought they might be on the later 1700z RIBI net.

From Malcolm PA3AHC
Re G-net Sundays at 0800z, the reason(s) you folks don't hear me any more are that :
- Often impossibly heavy QRN here in the top half of the  band
- With the Dutch net just under and the Germans just above while the Belgians have  a new net at 3700, not to speak of my SRS (Surplus Radio Society)  pals doing AM on 3705 also at 0800z, things get a little crowded ! Until and unless times change, PA3AHC will unfortunately need to be excused.

1700z – 1730z  RIBI evening 80-metre Net on 3,692

2000z - 2030z  N.AM Transcontinental Net on 14,287
From Bob WB7RQG
We had five checkins with Joe, W0TBC as net control.  The following joined the net;
Ed, N4EDT   Steve, AC9EM   K6LMJ and me WB7RQG.  We tried calling Pertti but no success.

From John G3OKT
In anticipation of the high sunspot activity, I listened for 10 minutes at 2000z but continuous S8 random noise was disappointing. I just heard Ed N4EDT calling EA7GSU but nothing else.

0700z – 0730z Tuesday 8th July 2014  EUR net on 14,295.2
From QRZ  SFI 198  A6  K1  Sunspots 197 (falling since Sunday)

From John G3OKT

PA3AHC was called by F1CFA, heard by Pertti but not heard here. Later Malcolm came up to 3.6 – 4.7 QSB in my steady S6 noise level (received noise reduced to S1 on my Jaybeam vertical but so were most signals except Spain!!) Brian heard Malcolm at 4.4, Jean Pierre heard him at 5.4 and later Pertti heard him at 5.8/9
EA/G4HMG was 5.8 here, gave VK4ZD 5.7 and got 5.4
G2FUU was heard here but no copy by me or G3LUW. Tommy was 5.6 with Pertti
GM4JAE was heard by EA/G4HMG but not here. Ian had problems raising anyone (see below)
M3BBF John a visitor on the Isle of Wight was 5.9+10dB here, but Bill only just heard him as “BB”. Jean Pierre gave M3BBF 5.3/5 and got 5.7
By 0725 signals were fading – Malcolm was 5.5 with HMG; I was down to 5.6/7
The net closed at 0735 but Diane VK4ZD called Malcolm who was 4.7 by now with me. Diane was 5.9 here and gave Malcolm 5.5. Malcolm gave Diane 5.6

From Ian GM4JAE
Not a good morning for me!
I listened from 0700 – 0720z and only towards the end heard one UK station, G3LUW (5/3). Earlier I heard the following:- EA/G4HMG (5/7); EA7GSU (5/7); PA3AHC (5/5-7) but with the exception of John EA/G4HMG at the very end nobody heard my efforts to call in from the North of Scotland.
I was using my TS850S feeding the M0CVO HW-42HP multi -band off centre fed dipole but with the good weather at present I will have to dismantle and check all the connections to ensure that it wasn't just propagation conditions!! The HW-42HP was reviewed in the July 2014 issue of Radcom but I have used it for a couple of years.
If you all plan to stay on 20metres I will put up a dedicated dipole, otherwise I will stick with my "favourite" band of 40metres which I find best for Europe and longer distances within the UK.

From Malcolm PA3AHC
Re the Tuesday net at 0700z, I'd be all in favour of trying 40m before switching to 20m, if only to maybe bring in a fellow 'Scot'  Ian/GM4JAE from Inverness.

That’s all for now,
73’s
