From John G3OKT
Sunspots number falling; band opened amazingly for DX as the sun came up and band noise dropped at 0830z. However very strong contest QRM.
Rob ZL1RD heard first with John EA/G4HMG under S9+20 Swedish contest QRM! John gave Rob 3.5 who was just hearable here; I heard John at 5.7, building quickly to
5.9+10dB.
Pertti EA7GSU heard Bill VK4ZD at 3.2 to 5.7. I could just hear Bill in the noise while Pertti was 5.9 here.
At 0748 I just heard Klaus but at no strength. An hour later, Klaus was 5.9+20dB here
Pertti gave Wally VK6YS 5.6 and Rob ZL1RD 5.9+ who returned 5.9. No copy of Wally here, and at that time Rob’s voice was just heard here under S9+10dB QRM.
At 0752, Doug ZL1BFS was strong here at 3.8 between QRM and gave Wally 5.8.
At 0756 I just heard VK4ZD under QRM pass to Klaus HB9CQS (3.4 with me) who gave many reports including 5.8 for EA/G4HMG and 5.8/9 for Wally
John G4HMG, by now 5.9 here, gave Klaus 5.9 and Brian G3LUW 5.9+.
Brian was a “hollow” 3.5 with me, under the noise.
Pertti, still 5.9 here, gave Alain F4GHB 5.9, Doug ZL1BFS 5.6 and G3LUW 5.8
At 0802 in a gap in S9+15dB QRM, VK4ZD was 2.5 – 2.6 here and gave Alain 5.7.
Vitor CT1BJZ who was 5.8 here gave VK4ZD 5.7, Klaus 5.9 and Alain 5.7.
At 0808 VK4ZD came up to 5.8 here and gave Vitor 5.7. Bill gave Brian G3LUW 5.4 and got 5.7. Brian still very hollow here.
Phil VK2MCB was hardly hearable here.
At 0820, Doug ZL1BFS now 5.8 here gave VK4ZD 5.6, EA/G4HMG 3.2, and me 5.5
Peter VK3KCD suddenly came up to a hollow 5.7 then dropped away in the noise.
John EA/G4HMG was getting ZL1BFS at 3.3 and ZL1RD 5.6/7.
Brian G3LUW gave ZL1BFS 5.7 and got 5.5/6. Doug gave F4GHB 5.4 – up from 4.3
At 0822 Vitor gave ZL1BFS 4.4 and got 4.5;
VK4ZD gave EA/G4HMG 5.4; Wally by now was a good 5.7 here and gave Pertti 5.9
I heard F4GHB give me 5.5 and CT1BJZ 5.8; Alain was about 4.7 here.
At 0826 Peter VK3KCD was down in horrendous contest QRM; Vitor couldn’t hear Peter either; Bill VK4ZD suddenly came up to 5.9 and gave me 5.7.
Vitor and I both thanked Teru-san JM2HBO through VK4ZD for sending us the CQ magazine report on the Lisbon CR6RI Convention station.
The net improved rapidly around 0830. Doug ZL1BFS said I was up from 5.5 to 5.7; John EA/G4HMG gave Bill 5.9 and received peaking 5.4; John who was 5.9+ with me gave Klaus 5.9, and Brian and me 5.9+. Pertti and Alain were 5.9+10dB here
Brian gave ZL1RD 5.9
Malcolm PA3AHC appeared about 0830 but hardly hearable here. Pertti relayed Malcolm’s report of 5.4 for VK4ZD
I left the net under heavy local noise at 0840
I will not be on 20m next Sunday but will be on 2nd February

0900z - 1000z UK 80-metre Net on 3,694
From John G7OAI/P who was net control “Thanks to Brian for looking after the net whilst I resolved my issues when /P”
G3LUW - 5x9
G3OKT - 5x9+40. Signed out at 0927 to attend to family matters.
G3JJR - generally 5x9.
G0PCF - not heard by me, but Brian heard his 1st call whilst I was resolving my problems.
G2FUU - 5x8-9.
F4GHB - called in for a couple of overs, but I could only give him a 1x5, but G3LUW, G3OKT and G2FUU could hear him.
PA3AHC called, but again my best report was 1x5. However, OKT & LUW could hear him.
The background noise level was unusually high today, a constant S5-6 on the meter of the Icom 706, even well away from any noise sources.
John G7OAI will be away next week.

From John G3OKT
John G7OAI/P was 5.9+20 here; gave me 5.9+30 and got 5.9 from G3LUW. John could not hear Alain F4GHB.
Brian G3LUW was 5.9+25 here, John G3JJR was 5.9+10 QSB and Bruce G0PFC was 5.9+10. Bruce was only 5.5 with Brian.
Tommy G2FUU had high noise and was not getting G3LUW as strong as usual; Tommy was 5.9+20 here and 5.8/9 with G7OAI/P
Alain F4GHB was 4.7 here with noise, exchanged 5.6 b/w with G3LUW
Malcolm PA3AHC was only 3.7 with me QSB and QRM and gave me 5.7. Neither John G7OAI/P nor Brian could copy Malcolm.
I left the net at 0920.

1200z - 1300z International Net on 14,292
From Bill VK4ZD
I listened on this net until 1220z when I heard no more calls.
I could hear nothing from NA and heard Pertti on SSB very faintly on the short path.

From Pertti EA7GSU
We were two, Mike and me with reasonable propagations although the
start wasn't promising. Mike, N4PF was 56 with me to start and grew to
57 whereas I started with 44 getting up to 57 towards the end at
1214hrs. There was a contest running causing some splatters but it
didn't harm the readability.

1800z – 1830z UK evening 80-metre Net on 3,692
From Pertti EA7GSU
I was looking for the RIBI 80m net around 1800 hrs but didn't find
anything. QRM level was quite high and band just opening for East-European stations.

From John G3OKT
Thanks to Tommy G2FUU for explaining that this net always starts at 1800 local time, ie 1800z during the UK winter and 1700z during the UK summer.

2000z - 2030z N.AM Transcontinental Net on 14,287
From Bob WB7RQG
I cancelled the net , too much going on the 20 meter band .

From Pertti EA7GSU
I first heard Joe, W0TBC opening the net. He was 42 to start with but
the skip was changing quickly and he came up to 53 in half an hours
time. I called on SSB and then CW without luck. The voice of Bob,
WB7RQG was recognizable but not readable. Joe, AF1E came to help me
through to other Joe, who was the net controller but so good the pipe
line was not and I was not lucky.
We were waiting to hear Mr President, Bill, VK4ZD to call as he had
promised but obviously there was an other pipe line blocked. My CW call
after the closing of the net at 2017hrs was also unsuccessful.
That is the activity!
My new email address is pikause at gmail.com. If you received mail from me pretending to be in Ucrania, do NOT send money! It wasn't me!

0700z – 0730z Tuesday January 21st NZ 80-m net on 3693

0730z – 0830z Tuesday January 21st EUR net on 7175
From QRZ SFI 137 (143) A 3 (7) K 1(2) Sunspots 131 Figs in ( ) last week
From John G3OKT
Brian G3LUW was 3.4/5 at 0730 building later to 5.7.
Pertti EA7GSU gave Brian peaking 5.9 and me 5.8. Pertti was 4.6 with me when I was receiving him on my 80m doublet but 5.9+ on a vertical antenna (because he explained, Pertti transmits on vertical polarization).
Dave KJ4MCZ in Virginia (a visitor) called in at 0740. Dave was 5.9+10 QSB with me, got 5.7 from Pertti and gave Pertti 4.4. Dave later gave me peaking 5.9
Malcolm PA3AHC was also 5.9 with QSB here, heard Dave at 4.3, Brian at 5.7, G3OKT at 5.9+ and Pertti down in the noise at 2.3.
Neither Dave nor Pertti could copy of Malcolm.
Brian, Pertti, Malcolm and I all agreed to move the net start time to 0800z next week.
The net closed at 0810.

That’s all for now,
73’s
John G3OKT
