ROAR Nets Report 20th April 2014

SFI 169 (steady) A 15 (dropping) K2 Sunspots 259 (falling from peak of 296)

0615z-0700z ANZO Net on 7118
From Peter VK3KCD
Active net with good propagation on 40mx for the East Coast this week. Bill VK4ZD was in VK6 for Easter and was QRV from Wally VK6YS shack. Not heard here, but Bill heard me at 0642 drifting in and out of the noise. Present were Phil VK2MCB, Noel VK2IWT, Bryce VK2FADS/P, John ZL2JPM/P at Lake Taupo and myself.

From Bill VK4ZD/VK6
I had the privilege of catching up with Wally VK6YS this day.
The time was a little early for propagation to VK6 but we could hear a little from Peter VK3KCD and John ZL2JPM (about 2 or 3 by 6 in the noise)

0700z - 0800z Europe - ANZO Net on 14,295.2 Long Path
From Peter VK3KCD
20mx propagation excellent and surprisingly equally good for Bill in VK6. I think I exchanged reports with all stations present many at strength 9 and will leave it to Bill to provide the details.
Diane VK4DI posted “Wally VK6YS & Bill VK4ZD In Pert: It's only been 33 years between drinks! - with Bill Main” with great pictures on the ROAR FACEBOOK page!

From Bill VK4ZD/VK6
I was on air from Wally's (VK6YS) shack as VK4ZD/VK6
Doug ZL1BFS was 57-8 and gave me 56
Malcolm PA3AHC was 56-7 and gave me 54
John ZL2JPM was 57 and gave me 55
Noel VK2IWT was 56-7 and gave me 59
Peter VK3KCD was 58-9 and gave me 59
Phil VK2MCB was 58-9 and gave me 57-8
Pertti EA7GSU was 57-8 and initially gave me 56, later building to 57-8
Wally VK6YS also had exchanges with many on the net
Klaus HB9CQS was 59 and gave me 58-9
Vitor CT1BJZ was 59+10 and gave me 56 (and gave Wally 57)
Rob ZL1RD called in briefly on a makeshift antenna (he lost the whole of his antennas in a storm) to have a word with Peter VK3KCD. He was 57 and gave me 59
Swa ON5SWA (visitor) was 57 and gave me 57, later peaking to 59. He was using 100w into a single quad loop
John G3OKT was 57 and gave me 57. He was enjoying an unusually low noise level

From John G3OKT
Strange conditions, low noise floor at S3, Band seemed dead (high absorption). According to QRZ, here was a major solar flare yesterday.
Bill VK4ZD/P6, south of Perth at the QTH of Wally VK6YC, was 5.7 with QSB down to S4.
Pertti EA7GSU gave Bill 5.6 +/- 1 S unit drift, tried 2 antennae and got 5.7 from VK4ZD/P6 on both; 1st antenna was better for me – Pertti was 5.8
HB9CQS Klaus was 5.6 here and never changed throughout the net (usually comes up to S9+30dB!); gave Bill 5.8 and got 5.9; gave ZL2JPM 3.3, 5.6/7 for VK3KCD, 5.5 for VK2MCB, 4.4 for VK2IWT.
ZL2JPM could barely be heard here.
CT1BJZ Vitor was excellent 5.9+10dB here; gave 5.6 for VK4ZD/P6 and got 5.9; gave Klaus 5.9; said Noel was in the noise; gave VK3KCD 5.3/4 and got 5.7/9; gave PA3AHC 5.8; gave VK3MCB 3.3 and G3OKT 5.6; and had no copy of ZL1BFS.
Rob ZL1RD was not heard here, but got 5.7 from VK4ZD/P6
A visitor ON5SWA exchanged 5.7b/w with VK4ZD/P6; was only 2.1 here.
Bill gave G3OKT 5.7 and allowed exchange of greetings with Wally whose sister in law from Oswestry was staying there for 2 months !
VK3KCD was 5.7/8 peaking S9 at one time! Peter gave me 5.5/7, exchanged 5.5 b/w with Pertti; gave HB9CQS 5.8/9
Doug ZL1BFS was called, but not heard here.
Malcolm PA3AHC was only 2.2/4 QSB here but was peaking 5.7 with VK4ZD/P6
VK2IWT Noel was only 2.1/3 with me, but gave VK3KCD 5.9+, Pertti 5.5, Malcolm 3.2 (?) and me 5.5
Phil VK2MCB was 5.5 with VK6YS
Pertti EA7GSU gave many reports which were lost for me under S9+20dB QRM from a nearby station, but included 5.6 for ZL2JPM (later 5.1!), gave Klaus 5.9; gave Vitor 3.1; 5.7 for G3OKT and Rob 5.5 (Bill explained that Rob was limited by a 18MHz vertical – he not heard here)

0800z - 0900z UK 80-metre Net on 3,693
From John G3OKT
I was net control today but was 10 mins late after re-tuning from the 20m ANZO net. I heard Derek G0SQH but had difficulty netting as Derek kept jumping 1kHz HF – he was 4.9 when I could find him!
Tommy G2FUU then called and we stayed on 3.698MHz. Initially 5.9+10dB and below usual strength, he came up 10dB over the next 10 minutes. Tommy said also that I was not usual strength, lacking punch and somewhat distorted. He was only getting Derek at 3.7/8.
A rather disorienting net of only 3 stations in a noisy band, lacking its usual activity.

1200z - 1300z International Net on 14,292

1800z – 1830z RIBI evening 80-metre Net on 3,692

2000z - 2030z N.AM Transcontinental Net on 14,287
From Bob WB7RQG
I was net control today with only 4 checkins
Jack, KF5BD Joe, AF1E who checked in Pertti, EA7GSU

0700z – 0730z Tuesday 22nd April 2014 NZ 80-m net on 3693

0700z – 0730z Tuesday 22nd April 2014 EUR net on 7150
SFI 159 A 18 K 1 sunspots 168 (dropping)
From John G3OKT
Band noise S5 here, many Eu stations at good strength.
Brian G3LUW was calling CQ at 5.9+15 at 0700z
PA5ON, Richard – a visitor, called in also at 5.9+15dB
John G4HMG/P in the UK was 5.8 on a temporary inverted V antenna – a good signal later when neighbouring strong stations allowed. Brian gave him 5.4. John gave me 5.9+15, 4.6 for Richard and 5.5 for Brian.
John and Diana are now here for the ROAR AGM in May.
The net closed at 0730z.

From Jean Pierre F1CFA
I am very disappointed...I can't hear nobody this morning...

That’s all for now,
73’s
