Roar Nets June 30th - July 2nd 2013

Roar Nets June 30th and July 2nd 2013
From QRZ SFI 100 A index 51 K=2 Exceptional Absorption and heavy QSB

0515z - 0600z ANZO Net on 7118
From Peter VK3KCD
Just Phil VK2MCB and myself on 40mx this week. Good sigs apart from a little QSB halfway through our contact.

0600z - 0700z Europe - Anzo Net on 14,293 Long Path
From Peter VK3KCD
20mx disappointing but not a big surprise considering the numbers. I had a contact with Pertti EA7GSU 43 both ways and then I got the S9 QRM from another signal at which time I went QRT ( approx 0630z ). I also heard Brian G3LUW and Jean Pierre F1CFA in the noise. No sign of John G3OKT.

From John G3OKT
Peter VK3KCD and Pertti EA7GSU were in QSO from 0602z but I couldn’t hear any VK or ZL stations.
Pertti EA7GSU said he could copy VK3KCD weakly but Q5.
Pertti was up to 5.9+15dB with me but with QSB down to the noise level at S7
Phil VK2MCB exchanged 4.2 reports with EA7GSU ; Phil later was 5.3 with Pertti, but no copy here. Also Phil was not copied by G3LUW.
Brian G3LUW was only 2.3 with G3OKT, later gave me 5.4, and was only 4.5 with Klaus, HB9CQS. Brian could copy Malcolm well and could also hear F1CFA.
Jean Pierre F1CFA was 5.5 to 5.9 (QSB) with me. He was 5.5 with Pertti, exchanged 5.9 reports with G3LUW, and could hear (at one time) Malcolm at 5.2.
Alain F4GHB was up to 5.9+20dB in QSB with me. He got 5.8 from Pertti and Alain could just hear VK2MCB at 5.1/2
Malcolm PA3AHC QSB’d up to 5.9+10dB with me; got 5.8 from Pertti; gave G3LUW 5.7/8. Malcolm gave G3OKT 5.7/8
John EA/G4HMG was not well and did not stay long, but was 4.9+10dB with me under QRM!
Klaus, HB9CQS was also not well, having contracted serious cold in Lisbon, but was 5.9+25dB with me. He gave Phil VK2MCB 3.4 and got Q5 from Phil.
The net was closed by Pertti at 0710.

From Pertti EA7GSU
It was good to be in Lisbon, it is good to be back home again!
ANZO net on Sunday morning did not offer good propagations. I heard Peter, VK3KCD calling at 0602 utc my time (hi) but quite faint. We changed reports 43 both ways with Peter having qrm and me having heterodyne. VK2MCB was there but no copy.
Next came John, G3OKT, then Brian, G3LUW and he was calling EA/G4HMG. John and Brian both 59 but no copy of -HMG apart from a brief burst.
Jean Pierre F1CFA came with 55/57 improving towards the end and Alain, F4GHB was 58.
Peter VK3KCD complained of the qrm and went qrt but then I heard Phil,VK2MCB with 42 improving to 53 later.
Malcolm, PA3AHC was 58 and gave me the same. All EU stations had a slow and deep qsb.
Towards the end Klaus, HB9CQS came with the usual 59 boom and sore throat.
All in all, a cumbersome net but we made it. Next time it will be better.
I will be absent from my home station until end of August but will carry a mobile with me, so God willing I will participate!

0800z - 0900z UK 80-metre Net on 3,693
Brian G3LUW was Net Control
High noise level throughout making it difficult for some stations to hear others.
John G3OKT heard G3LUW at 5.9+30, G0JWE at 5.9+15, G3JJR at 5.9+25, G4WRU 5.9+15, G2FUU at 5.9+20 and G0PCF at 5.9+20
Don G0JWE could only just tell G3LUW was there; gave G3JJR 5.9
John G3JJR got 5.7 from G3LUW
Mike G4WRU was getting Brian Q5 in S9 noise, and received G3OKT at 5.9+20dB
Tommy G2FUU was getting G3OKT at 5.9+20 but G3JJR at only 4.8
Bruce G0PCF said most stations were below his noise level. Tommy was QSBing from 20dB over S9 to below noise!
John G3JJR said he would miss the net next week – birthday celebrations in N Wales
G0PCF and G3OKT had given similar talks to respective Clubs on deteriorating radio conditions as Sunspot activity is predicted to decline. Agreed to swap data.
Mike G4WRU is 5/6 way through his treatment – all wished him well for full recovery. John G3JJR said that Pauline had collapsed on Wednesday – all hoped she would return from hospital soon.
John G3OKT will be Net Control next week. Brian closed the net at 0852z.

1200z - 1300z International Net on 14,293
From Pertti EA7GSU
Not a very successful meeting, band seems to sleep the siesta this time of the day. Mike, N4PF responded immediately to my opening, as always but he had problems in copying my sig's. He was 52 with me and gave me 33.
Faintly I heard Malcolm, PA3AHC and we changed 42 both ways. When I turned my beam to his direction, it became 57 for both.
Beaming 300º didn't bring results with Mike neither with Malcolm who had no copy of Mike.
After several calls to North and to NW, I decided to close the net at 1215utc.
I am leaving for Finland this week but will have a mobile with me. When suitable, I will join the nets (if audible) and will be back to my shack at the end of August. A pleasant Summer for everyone

1700z - 1730z UK evening 80-metre Net on 3,693

1900z - 1930z N.AM Transcontinental Net on 14,287
From Pertti EA7GSU
The Trans-Continental net at 1900utc seem to have been as successful as the Atlantic net. I heard only AF1E, Joe and only 43. As understood also Bob, WB7RQG and Jack, KF5BD were present but no copy at all. Joe closed the net at 1917utc.
Band was very crackly and SV net two kc down was a pain as well.
Cu as mobile (en route to Finland next week), I hope!

0700z – 0730z Tuesday July 2nd NZ 80-m net on 3693

0700z – 0740z Tuesday July 2nd EUR Net on 14,150
From Pertti EA7GSU
Brian G3LUW responded to my first call and we were 59 both. John, EA/G4HMG came after Brian called him but I had practically no copy.
In between the change of turns I heard J-P, F1CFA who was 56 coming up to 58 later. Brian had no copy of him and went qrt but then I faintly heard Malcolm, PA3AHC. He was only 31 and I had problems in copying him. He gave me 57. J - P had a 51 copy of Malcolm.
At 0725utc I closed the net.
Just before the sked I was testing my mobile rig (ICOM 735) and caught Henk VK2GWK on 14177kHz. He gave me 45 and remark of RF in the mic channel probably because the rig was below the antenna. It will be amended! I am confident with the rig now!

Propagation
Mike G8LES has since sent the following:-
I did work Pertti on the convention station on Wednesday he was about a 57 not very strong, not many other good signals on 20 metres.
The prediction for magnetic activity around coronal holes is continued reduction, the graph below (not included but e-mail me, JET) shows a year on year steady downward slope and solar forecasters are reckoning that the sun is on its 400 year cycle of going to sleep. The last time this minimum was reached back in history 400 years ago the Thames froze over in winter.
Ofcom have issued a paper to aircraft pilots stating that sun events are likely to wipe out transatlantic communication on HF and they may also lose their sat nav.
So its really no wonder we are having a few issues.

As a matter of interest, I (JET) gave a corresponding talk to my Club earlier in the year. You can see the presentation at www.oldplace.org.uk and click on “Rotary Talk”. Sounds as if we (and our ancestors) have difficult times ahead !!

That’s all for now, 73’s to all
