Roar Nets August 7 2011

Propagation very poor.   K=2,  A=6,  Flux=105

0530z - 0600z  Anzo Net on 7,118.
Many Thanks to Peter VK3KCD for the following report :-
Good Morning Bill
40 mx report
Variable propagation on 40mx this week enhanced by electrical storm activity with Bill VK4ZD, Phil VK2FPDB, Doug ZL1BFS and myself present. Eventually signals improved so we all had good copy on each other. At about 0545 Pertti EA7GSU was heard and joined by John EA/G4HMG. I believe Doug ZL1BFS exchanged 5x7 reports with both Pertti and John and Bill VK4ZD also had a contact with both, all on SSB. I am able to report that Phil was successful in his licence upgrade and soon we will hear a three letter call from his QTH. You could hear the smile on his face!

0600z - 0700z  Europe - Anzo Net on 14,293 Long Path.
20mx report
Very poor conditions on 14293 I heard Coco YO9BC peaking 5x7 both Bill VK4ZD and I called him but propagation collapsed at that point. Bill VK4ZD had a scratchy contact with Pertti EA7GSU and I could just copy Pertti but I think he had a better signal from me. Hoping for better results next week.

Following from Mike N4PF later :-
Hello Bill,
I am sitting here listening to static where the Rotary Net should be (14.290). I suppose the solar storms wiped out our chances for a net today. I usually can at least hear W1QUO in the noise, and usually much better.
I just wanted you to know that I did give it a shot. Let's hope for better conditions next Sunday.
Best regards,   Mike N4PF.    (Thanks Mike).

Thanks to Jack KF5BD for this report :_
Bill:
This is not the regular report.
Gentlemen, Since WB7RQG was unable to hear the check ins and relay station was getting too many complaints from other stations -----considering public relations the Roar net was closed early, around 1920 utc. I was not hearing the other stations and neither was Bob.
Bob lives on the almost west coast and I live in the middle part or SW of USA.
Bob is open to ideas.
I am wondering if trying to work coast to coast is workable as we are trying to do it now .
Let the net control gather the check-ins. Then in the order recived Let that man make his comments then turn it over to the next man and go around that way. The last man turns it back to the Conrol who calls for more check ins.. I am a member of such a group and it seems to work-------so far. True, you may not hear every body but you may hear some of them.
Jack Page KF5BD in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

From John Maier W8AUV {-
Today I had a lapse of memory and began monitoring at 1800 UTC. The frequency was clear. Only stations near-by were on 14.290. Maybe the move to 1900 should be reexamined. 73, John, W8AUV

From Chuck Graham KI6DCD
Gentlemen,
When re-examining this remember neither 1800 or 1900 utc works for West Coast church goers.
There are at least 2 of us in the SF Bay Area that would participate but don’t schedule just for us as we are not always available like some of you. My G5RV is down for replacement. I’ve had to repair the mast and then eliminate a wasp nearby that was causing me to keep my distance except at near dusk. I’ll be back up talking to at least Jack soon.
   73,   Chuck KI6DCD

And from Jim W1QUO ;-
After much opinion sampling and review of the problems that beset operating Transcontinental net I suggest the following.
It would seem that a starting time of 1900 UTC is acceptable to the majority of current participants.
Lets continue to give 1900 UTC a try. If the net controller becomes aware of a strong interference , caused by the Roar Net, he will make the decision to move to another frequency or "sweat it out on 14.288" .
This has worked very well, for example, on July 31st the net controller moved from 14.288 to 14.289 and everyone seemed to be happy.
Also, the role of one or more relay stations should help. Under the direction on net control, this is a good way to pick up the weaker signals.
Yes there is sometimes a net operating at 1900 UTC, Sunday on 14.288 and it gives us a hard time on the east coat as well as the mid west. I am hopeful that a jump to an open frequency will solve this.
Remember when the QRM is heavy to keep transmissions short and don't forget to add a bucket of patience.
73's   Jim W1QUO
